Since the first term of Barrack Hussein Obama’s presidency, it is obvious that America has greatly and swiftly declined spiritually. There are accompanying declinations also, but those are primarily related to political reasons and this article is not addressing anything political. The primary purpose of this writing is to take a closer look at the spiritual decline of America and see if we can understand, Biblically, what is going on. There is a great difference in the spiritual climate now as before the Obama administration took office.
My wife and I were discussing that question this morning and we both pondered the quick rise of Obama from a virtual political nobody to the top office in the free world, the Presidency of the United States of America. What was the power behind his meteoric rise in his presidency? How did he go overnight from a nobody to the most important person in the free world, even in the whole world? The Bible teaches us that there are evil powers behind the thrones of the world powers and those powers are evidenced by the desires of Satan to rule in this world through the wicked nations. The Nazis of Germany during WWII tried to destroy the Jews and built tremendously evil and wicked concentration camps designed to reduce the world’s population of Jews. Those are the desires and goals of Satan. He hates God’s people.
America must give God the praise for the rise in her position as world leader and superior military power. God has blessed America for many reasons, but the greatest of these is that she was founded on the Judeo-Christian principles. The founding fathers relied greatly upon the Word of God to guide them in the formation of the greatest nation on the face of the earth. Another asset that we can lay to the cause of America’s blessings is that from the beginning she has supported Israel. In the Abrahamic Covenant, God told Abraham in Genesis 12:3 – “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed”. God had made a promise to all nations and men that if they bless the nation of Israel and her people, that He would bless them for helping His chosen people. That has been an unpopular position for America over the years, but one that has garnered for her God’s favor. America’s wealth, power, prestige, abundance of natural and human resources are all blessings provided by Almighty God, who keeps His promises.
In recent years we have seen a rise in homosexuality and other sexual sins, abortion, euthanasia, murder, rape, stealing and a drop in the number of marriages; people just chose to live together and ignore the laws of God and man. We see on the news on a nightly basis all the riots and destruction in American cities as the local governing bodies call it “free speech” in action as they allow them to destroy our country right before our eyes. And the Police are powerless to do much because the whole world is against the law enforcement officers and agencies. Many are being defunded or literally disbanded. Friend, did you ever think you would live to see such things as this going on in America? The America that I grew up in no longer exists; I miss it. I mourn the passing of the once greatest nation on the face of the earth. Great because God made us great. We used to give God the glory for everything but now we don’t even acknowledge that there is a God.
This day reminds me of the time at the end of the Judges when the Bible says, “every man did that which was right in his own eyes”. People today do not care what the law says or what God’s Word says, they just do what they want to do and use no value system in their decisions. They just do what suits them and that is the end of it. Don’t they know that we are going to have to stand before a just God and give an account of everything done in the flesh? Probably not, because the Word of God that teaches these things is lost in our society. Churches, real spiritual Churches, are declining rapidly and many are forced to close their doors because there are just not enough of people left to pay the light bill. People are not hearing the Word preached or taught as once was the case. People just do not believe there is a God anymore. And no great mystery because they are taught in government run schools that there is no God and that man is the master of his own destiny. All the natural sciences that are taught in schools and colleges are based on the theory of evolution, only they now leave the word theory off; they just call it evolution as if it is a fact. No, the fact is that there is a God in heaven, and we are subject to His laws. We used to be taught to repent and get right with God before we leave this world but now, men do not fear God at all. America has become “One Nation Against God”.
Proverbs 14:34 declares that, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people”. Americans used to know this and acted accordingly. America used to know that sin was a reproach to any nation. Today the word sin is not even in our vocabulary. Ask any American if they can tell you what sin is and see what answer you get. Most would probably say, “I don’t know what you are talking about” or something to that effect because they don’t know what you are talking about, they are ignorant to God’s will or Word.
So, what is the answer for America? Many might say that revival is the only answer, the only hope for America. Is America ready for revival? Is she receptive to the preached word? Could a latter-day revival save America from the obvious judgment that she is headed swiftly toward? I am inclined to say that America has gone too far down the road to self-destruction. She has gone past the point of return and is gaining speed in her downhill spiritual direction. America has sinned away her day of Grace. All we Christians can do is watch and pray. Watch for the Lord to return and pray that God will intervene with individuals in our families. We cannot stop praying for our loved ones just because we see the nation in a self-destruction mode. It hurts to watch this once bastion of holiness decline and crumble.
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance”, Psalm 33:12. We once were a nation whose God was the LORD, and we once were a people whom He had chosen as His own inheritance because we were a godly people. We were a righteous nation that sent missionaries all over the world spreading the gospel and we once had a hunger to see lost souls saved. We used to be ambassadors for Christ in heathen lands. We sent missionaries far and wide to preach the gospel of Grace to lost people who had no opportunity to hear the Word of God. America used to make a difference in the world for God. America used to be that blessed nation. America used to be God’s chosen inheritance in the gentile world. America was the world’s last best hope but not anymore. We have gone the way of all flesh; only judgment remains. God help us. Oh Lord, in judgment have mercy. Even so Lord Jesus, come quickly.
